I’ve been at this game called entrepreneurship since 2012. In the beginning, I did lots of testing, learning, and making sure that someone would actually buy what I was selling!

I made money every year even during the testing and learning phases, but didn’t officially launch a business entity until 2014. There has been much to learn (still learning) with lots of ups and down.

I know 2017 will be different at a higher level from my previous years. Each year things have improved and gotten better, but I still feel I haven’t risen to the potential I dreamed from the start.

There have been different dynamics throughout the years like working a job when I thought I had crossed that bridge (never to return) in early 2013 only to find myself back working a job simultaneously.

In 2016 I worked as an employee from January through mid February and since then have still been solely committed to my business!

On the business side I made $30,000 (2016) by offering virtual assistance primarily for one client and social media and online marketing for a handful of others. (That may not be much to many entrepreneurs, but I know where I started and celebrating the process because it’s been a long road!)

Totally made the switch completely to social media and online marketing services mid 2016.

As the year came to a close, I realized there were so many places and opportunities where I could have earned much more.

On the other hand, I’m grateful that I could be home to take care of my husband and kids, visit family in Mississippi and Michigan, and still make money. Having that flexibility is one of the main reasons I wanted to be an entrepreneur.

Little did I know that it offers so much more and my hunger has surged!

My goal for 2017 is to double what I made in 2016! I’ve run all the numbers, pricing and how much I can actually handle in client load and work while still being present with my family.

To be honest, I’m not on track for double based on the numbers so far (First Quarter: $7,400), but with a little bit of extra hustle juice, I know it’s possible and thrilled at the possibilities before me.

Now that I’ve gotten that out-of-the-way (whew!), here are a few fun things and accomplishments from the first quarter:

  • Took on a new retainer client and getting more referrals than ever before!
  • Joined the Millard Business Association & a referral group within the organization where I’ve attended several networking events! (Omaha).
  • Did a fun speaking event about social media and online marketing with local wedding planners! (Omaha).
  • Traveled to Orlando with a client for a business workshop and to meet with one of her clients!
  • Paid off my student loan debt in full! (whoop! whoop!)
  • The basement in our home got remodeled! (whoop! whoop!)
  • Attended career day at one of the local elementary schools to speak with third graders about business, marketing, and sales. To my surprise, they were more interested than I could have imagined they would be!  (Omaha)

Enjoy this short video with a few clips from some of the events listed above:

P.S. – What are some of your successes and accomplishments this year? What are you working on in this next quarter and the remainder of the year?

To your success,

Geniece Brown

Goals help to provide the framework for reaching our dreams, and I love how you’re doing this, Geniece! I’d be willing to wager you’ll meet your 2017 goals too 🙂

You may not be quite on track for the first quarter, Geniece, but you sure have accomplished a lot. You must feel so pumped about that. As well as paying off loans and having renovations done, it sounds like you’ve had some fun experiences too. My major accomplishment this year has been to successfully reopen my arts and crafts school for kids. I didn’t realise quite how passionate I was about sharing this creativity with children until this year.

      Hi Tamuria,

I am pumped about what I’ve accomplished so far but even more pumped to move into a greater capacity! Thank you so much for sharing your major accomplishment for the year! I took a look at your website and love what you’re doing for kids in the arts and crafts area! Thinking and operating in the creative is one of the best things for kids (I believe)! Much success to you with reopening your school this year!!

Great fun to read a post about your progress in entrepreneurship. Five years! That’s an achievement. It was even more fun to see another person in Omaha. It sounds like you were brave and you did it right.

Thank you for reading! You’re in Omaha too – small world! It would be great to meet up since we are both local!

Loved the way you lead with a little venting and found your solutions. Reminds me of my journal process! Over the years I have created so much content. My goal for this year is to use the content I have and create products and services, including my new book. It is mostly done and I ‘m working on a title.

      Hi Candess,

I love that with a blog, you can do a bit of journaling, venting or whatever you like! Re-purposing your wealth of content to create products and services is such a practical and awesome way to use it and build upon it! And a new book – what an accomplishment! Congratulations!!

What an inspiring post! Thank you for sharing your successes–it really helps to hear about it, especially since I’m a new entrepreneur. While we’ve had a freelance business for many years, I left my full time corporate job only a year ago. You’re crushing it! Congratulations on your wins! Doubling your income is a nice goal but not necessarily an indicator of success. It’s more about success in other ways, as you pointed out above. 🙂

      Hi Teresa,

It can be so easy to forget about all that we’ve accomplished when we think we haven’t done enough. That’s the very reason I wrote this post! That’s fantastic that you encourage your clients to celebrate their accomplishments too. Thank you for reading!

      Hi Apolline,

I’ve never really documented and tracked as well as I should have in the past so I also have some google sheets that go a little more in depth on actual income, expenses, and goals! I too am looking forward to what transpires in this present quarter! Thank you for reading!

Geniece, I absolutely love that you posted this article about your goals and results for Q1. I’m a HUGE believer in setting and tracking goals and love how you are holding yourself accountable and did this. I LOVE that you’ve done some traveling, paid off your student loans (YIPPEEEE) and did some great visibility things. I’m focused on visibility this year so I notice these things – lol. I think I’ll do a similar post!

Congratulations! What a wonderful bunch of things to celebrate, and it’s so important to celebrate our successes -whether they are big or small. I think it’s great that you’ve pivoted into your passion and are dropping things that no longer serve what you want. That’s tremendous!
